STATEMENT OF UNDERSTANDING REGARDING THE AMSL STUDENT HANDBOOK.
- I understand that a link to the AMSL Student Handbook is provided on each student’s portal page on the AMSL portal. This document also contains academic and administrative policies such as attendance requirements, exam procedures, grading policies, refund policies, employment limitations, e-mail and internet communications policies, student conduct standards, disciplinary procedures, and degree requirements. Students are strongly advised to read this document thoroughly as they will be held responsible for knowing and following these policies.
STATEMENT OF UNDERSTANDING REGARDING FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
- I understand that Ave Maria School of Law (AMSL) will communicate with me electronically. I agree to receive all communication from AMSL in electronic form. Electronic communications may be posted on the AMSL portal or delivered to my AMSL email address.
- I authorize AMSL and its agents and contractors to contact me at my current and any future cellular phone number(s), email address(es) or wireless device(s) regarding my delinquent student account(s)/loan(s), any other debt I owe to AMSL, or to receive general information from AMSL to the extent permissible under applicable law. I authorize AMSL and its agents and contractors to use automated telephone dialing equipment, artificial or pre-recorded voice or text messages, and personal calls and emails in their efforts to contact me. Furthermore, I understand that I may withdraw my consent to call or text my cellular telephone using automated telephone dialing equipment by submitting a clear revocation request to the Student Accounts Office or to the applicable contractor or agent contacting me on behalf of AMSL.
- I understand that I am responsible for updating my record in Self-Service when I change my local or permanent address, my non-AMSL email address, my telephone numbers, or my emergency contact information within 7 days of such change.
- I understand that I am required to pay all AMSL charges pursuant to AMSL policies.
- I understand that AMSL is advancing value to me in the form of educational services and that my right to register is expressly conditioned upon my agreement to pay institutional costs including, but not limited to, tuition, fees, housing, and any additional costs, when those charges become due.
- I understand that I will not receive a paper bill when I register for classes each semester. It is my responsibility to view my charges on my Student Account Statement, which is available before the beginning of each semester in Self-Service on the AMSL portal.
- I understand that my bill must be paid in full by the first day of class each semester. If my bill is not paid in full by the first day of class, it is subject to a $50 late fee. Additional late fees of $100 will be incurred every 30 days thereafter while the bill remains unpaid, as detailed in the AMSL Student Handbook.
- I understand that $25 will be charged to my account if the bank returns a check for insufficient funds.
- I understand that my student account is delinquent if there is a past due unpaid balance on my account.
- I understand that if my student account is delinquent, a hold will be placed on my account which will block future registration and the issuance of a diploma and other services. These requests will be denied until the delinquency has been resolved.
- I understand that if my account is delinquent, AMSL will communicate with me by email in an effort to resolve the delinquency prior to the commencement of outside agency collection efforts.
- I understand that my delinquent account may be reported to a credit bureau, turned over to an outside collection agency or litigated. I agree to pay any costs associated with the collection of unpaid charges, including attorney fees and court costs. This agreement shall be construed in accordance with Florida law, and any lawsuit to collect unpaid fees may be brought in the appropriate court sitting in Collier County, Florida, regardless of my domicile at the time of bringing such action.
- If my account is turned over to a collection agency, AMSL will add the amount of all collection fees to my account. The current collection fees are 25% of the unpaid amount of the delinquent account.
STATEMENT OF UNDERSTANDING REGARDING COURSE ADD/DROP AND WITHDRAWAL PROCEDURES
- I understand that non-attendance does not constitute a withdrawal. I also understand that notifying my professor does not constitute a withdrawal. I further understand in order to withdraw or drop my course(s), I am responsible for providing official written notification to the Academic Dean and Office of the Registrar. I understand that drops and withdrawals may affect my Satisfactory Academic Progress standing as set forth by the U. S. Department of Education.
- I understand that if I drop all of my courses in a semester, I am considered withdrawn for refund purposes. I understand that application fees and seat deposits are non-refundable. My tuition will be refunded to my AMSL student account according to the Tuition Adjustment Schedule published on the Student Accounts Office page of the AMSL portal and in the AMSL Student Handbook. If I am a financial aid recipient, I understand that withdrawal from all courses in a semester will result in a recalculation of my eligibility for federal financial aid for that semester. I understand that I may be required to return federal student loan funds to AMSL.
STATEMENT OF UNDERSTANDING REGARDING CAMPUS VIDEO RECORDING AND MONITORING, CAMPUS SECURITY, AND WEAPONS
- I understand that, in the interest of safety and security, AMSL may monitor areas under its ownership or control through the use of video surveillance equipment in order to promote, maintain and enhance the safety and security of its faculty, staff, students, visitors and property. This may include the installation of video surveillance devices or other video recording equipment upon any property owned or controlled by AMSL.
- I understand that video monitoring for security purposes will be consistent with all existing AMSL policies, including but not limited to the Non-Discrimination Policy, the Sexual Harassment Policy, other school policies, as well as applicable state or federal laws, regulations or judicial orders.
- I understand that AMSL respects the privacy of AMSL community members. Any video surveillance or monitoring conducted upon AMSL property pursuant to this policy shall occur in public areas. Public areas include, but are not limited to, classrooms, parking lots, sidewalks, building entrances and lobbies, staircases and stairwells, hallways and corridors, ATMs and point of sale/monetary transaction areas. Private areas such as the following shall not be subject to video surveillance: residence hall rooms, bathrooms, shower areas, lockers and changing rooms, areas where a reasonable person might change clothes, and private offices such as faculty offices. Additionally, the Chaplain’s office, rooms for medical, physical, or mental therapy or treatment are private.
- I understand that while video cameras are permitted in other non-public areas, they will to the maximum extent possible be used narrowly to protect money, real or personal property, documents, supplies, equipment, or pharmaceuticals from theft, destruction, or tampering.
- I understand that there may be classes that are recorded, for a variety of reasons, such as for students who are ill, located at a remote location, for educational purposes, etc.
- I understand that students taking exams, including those who are separately tested without a proctor in the room, may be video and audio recorded, to ensure the academic integrity of the exam.
- I understand that at all times, AMSL shall adhere to all applicable state or federal privacy laws.
- I understand that weapons are prohibited in all campus buildings, grounds, on-campus housing, and in vehicles on campus, unless otherwise permitted by Florida law. For the purposes of this policy, a weapon is an instrument, article, or substance which is specifically designed for and presently capable of causing death, incapacitation, or serious physical injury. This includes but is not limited to firearms of any nature; any explosive device; any type of knife commonly referred to as a switch-blade which has a blade that opens either by hand pressure applied to a button, spring, or other device in the handle of the knife or opens by force of gravity or centrifugal force; any straight-blade knife with a blade of four inches or more, except those designed for and used solely in the preparation or service of food or for opening letters; any martial arts weapons such as martial arts stars or nunchaku; projectiles that could cause serious harm such as bows and arrows.
- I understand that on-campus housing residents must store any weapons off campus.
- I understand that the only exceptions to the above are police and deputy sheriffs, as well as the Ave Maria School of Law Security.
